Blackpool defender Marvin Ekpitita apologized for historical homophobic posts on social media that surfaced after his teammate Jake Daniels came out gay.

The 26-year-old Committee made the publications, which he called “offensive and completely inappropriate”, in 2012 and 2013.

“I take full responsibility for these publications and I am sorry,” Ekpiteta said on social media.

Since then, Ekpiteta has deleted historical publications that it said were “highlighted” on Tuesday.

He played on the same Blackpool team as Daniels when the midfielder, who has been with the Seasiders since the age of seven, made his debut for the first team on May 7 after losing to Peterborough.

“I want to apologize wholeheartedly for the offensive and completely inappropriate language I used, as well as for the feelings I expressed,” the Committee said.

“As a footballer and in the years spent working before becoming a professional player, I was lucky to work with a wide and diverse range of people. During this period I developed and grew as a person.

“Yesterday I was proud of Jake and everyone involved in Blackpool for what is a very positive moment for football in general.

“I am embarrassed by the comments I made as a 17-year-old nearly a decade ago, which in no way reflect the values I hold now or the beliefs I have as a person or as a teammate.

“Football should be a place where everyone can feel free to be true to themselves, and I’m upset that the comments I’ve made before suggest otherwise.
