There is not much to report from Brian Nelson. All bets were won, but no one was ever in dispute. Davis Riley gave a brief glimmer of hope that he could be in the top five, but cooled down in the back nine and finished 9th.

We are now in the second big season of the season, with Southern Hills hosting the PGA Championship.

This is the first time we have seen a PGA in this place in 15 years. The last time he was here, Tiger Woods detained Woody Austin and Ernie Els to win the title.

Course

Southern Hills had to play at 7,556 yards for a par 70, about 400 yards longer than when Woods won in 2007.

We will see that water plays the role of 15 holes, so the precision of both the tee and the iron will be key. Length, as always, will be an advantage, but much of that advantage will come into play in par 5s. Both are set to play over 600 yards, limiting the number of players they can legally reach to two. Par 4 are relatively short by the standards of the last major leagues with seven set to play under 450 yards and only one is over 500 yards in the original scorecard.

The weather, mainly the wind, can come into play with gusts above 20 mph quite often. Early forecasts have late Thursday and early Friday, potentially catching the worst, but we all know how the weather can fluctuate during the week.

Favorites

At the top we have Scotty Scheffler and John Ram, who opened between +1000 and +1200 in various sports bets. Scheffler has four wins in the last three months, while Ram finally boarded this season in his last start in Mexico.

In this range from +1400 to +1800 we see Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spy, Justin Thomas, Colin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson. Spieth will be popular in this range. He won the Harbor Town and was second to AT&T Byron Nelson, so the form is there. McIlroy was second in Augusta, followed two weeks ago by fifth place in Wells Fargo.

From this group, however, this may be best for Morikawa. He was fifth in Augusta and won seven shots on approach to Harbor Town. If, in the end, this is played a little harder due to the storm, the river and the wind, he is the elite man who will do best in my eyes.

In the 2000s, we have Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Victor Howland, Xander Schaufele and Patrick Cantlay. Howland will be popular after playing college golf in Oklahoma, but with plenty of places to escape around the greens, we’ll see how the short game lasts for him. Schauffelle and Cantlai won in Zurich, and Schauffelle followed a hot weekend to finish in Byron Nelson’s top 5.

We haven’t seen Smith in a few weeks after Zurich, and he hasn’t appeared in the August charts. However, he and Scheffler are already on the betting card this week, along with Shane Lowry, in much larger numbers. I would not recommend them at current prices.

The middle class

I will open here with Max Homa at +6600 on BetMGM. It was added to my +9000 card when it got into the Wells Fargo dispute, but I still like it here. Hitting the ball has been accumulating for several months. He received 10 hits in his victory two weeks ago. He has five more finishes in the top 20 in 2022 and won in the fall.

With three wins in the last 15 months, Homa has become one of the best players in the game as he approaches the top of the charts. We haven’t seen him do it in a field of this caliber yet, but he has won at Riviera and Quayle Hollow, who have held majors in the past. This shows that Homa is able to do it in these types of places.

We will also go to Matt Fitzpatrick at +4500. He played well throughout the season, finishing in the top 20 of seven of his nine starts in 2022. Better form is linked to better hitting the ball. He continues to gain positions from this and with the approach. Both areas were a little above average for him and he would play his short game. His short game is still solid, but he now ranks in the top 25 in all four categories of shots won. He became a rounder player and this led to strong results.

The Longshots

I have two names here, but let’s start with Keegan Bradley at +12500 on WynnBet. Wherever there is a need for a full game of tee-to-green and where the winning result is likely to reach around 10-pod, Bradley can be a factor. He finished 11th or better in five of his last seven starts, so the form is there. The reason it is better is to rise in the short game. He gets hit around the green almost every week and has been above average with the runner in three of his last five starts.

I also go to Davis Riley at 200-1 at WynnBet. This is probably more of a top 20 game, but its form is really good. He was ninth last week and ranked in the top 10 in four of his last six starts. He played a hot short game in many of these results, but Byron Nelson managed to win positions in all four categories – a promising sign for the rookie, who has bet on a tour ticket for next season.

I don’t need to bet much on Riley, but like last week, I think this could be a place where he plays better than the odds suggest.

With my bets in the months before this event, this pretty much ends the final results for the week. From here, we’ll focus on the details when they become available, and see if anything else catches our eye.
