Idaho murders: Brian Koberger search warrants unsealed

A Washington court has unsealed search warrants for the office and apartment of University of Idaho stabbing suspect Brian Koberger, a 28-year-old Washington State University Ph.D. student accused of killing four students in nearby Moscow, Idaho.

A search of his office in the school’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology turned up nothing, according to the documents, but police found hair samples, cloth with dark red stains and a black glove, and other evidence in his apartment.

The warrants were initially sealed, but a Washington judge ordered the release of redacted versions of the documents on Wednesday.

In the newly released documents, investigators described previously undisclosed evidence they are looking for, including blood, DNA, shoes with diamond pattern soles and “data compilations” of information about the victims and the house on King Road where they were killed.

Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and another count of felony burglary after allegedly sneaking into a six-bedroom house near the University of Idaho, about 10 miles from his apartment in Washington, and assaulting ambushed four students around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13.

The long-awaited warrants contain new details about what investigators discovered after arresting the suspect, who has a master’s degree in criminal justice from DeSales University.

“These killings appear to be planned rather than a crime committed in a time of conflict.

“An order.”

The warrants allege Koberger planned the ambush in advance and studied other murders and how to avoid detection as part of his preparation.

“These murders appear to have been planned and not a crime committed in a time of conflict,” the affidavit seeking the search warrant said.

From Kohberger’s apartment, police seized a single “nitrite black glove,” a Walmart receipt and a Dickies tag, two Marshalls store receipts, a Bissell vacuum cleaner dust container, eight “possible strands of hair,” a Fire TV stick, one “possible strand of animal hair’, four other ‘possible’ hairs and a computer tower.

Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI arrested Koberger on Dec. 30 at his parents’ house in the Poconos Mountains, the same day their counterparts in Washington executed search warrants at his apartment and at his WSU office.

The court previously ordered the warrants sealed for two months, citing the risk of possible threats to law enforcement, the integrity of the investigation and public safety, but left open the possibility that they could be made public sooner.

Whitman County District Attorney Dennis Tracy unsealed them.

“These warrants were issued and served in Washington State because a suspect in the crimes lived and worked here at the time of the murders,” Tracy wrote. “These warrants and related filings were sealed due to the sensitive nature of the investigation at the time. An extensive affidavit of probable cause has since been unsealed in Latta County, Idaho, alleviating the need to seal the return here in Washington.”
