Freezing rain, ice pellets and snow are expected to culminate in a mix of severe weather in Toronto and across southern Ontario on Thursday.
Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning covering most of southern Ontario, from London to Kingston.
“Temperatures, at or above freezing, will allow precipitation patterns to change throughout the day,” said CTV News Toronto weather anchor Lindsey Morrison.
Freezing rain, sleet and snow are expected in the morning. As temperatures rise above zero degrees Celsius, the weather will turn to drizzling rain.
“As we head out the door on Thursday morning you can expect light snow in some areas and then we’ll get into some light freezing rain.” Ice balls will be available around noon. In the afternoon as the temperature rises, we could transition to drizzle or rain,” Morrison said.
A winter weather warning is in effect north of Toronto, expecting 5 to 10 cm of snow on Thursday in areas such as Haliburton and Parry Sound.
The City of Toronto has released a winter storm update detailing plans to deploy crews and equipment to “strategic” and “high priority” locations, along with salting surfaces as soon as snow begins to accumulate.
The National Weather Service recommends caution on highways, roads, trails and parking lots as they become icy and slippery.
