A polar vortex will end Alberta’s 2013 winter break

These are the two worst winter words in the world, and they’re about to become very popular in Alberta: polar vortex.

A ferocious weather system hovering over Siberia is generating the coldest temperature on Earth so far this year and could be headed for Canada as early as February, according to meteorologists.

This will likely bring an abrupt end to Calgary’s January break from winter.

“We’re showing a large area of all of British Columbia, all of the prairies, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon and all the way to northwestern Ontario as colder than normal for the month of February,” David Phillips, Environment Canada’s chief meteorologist, told CTV News. “I think it’s a direct result of the dip south of the polar vortex.”

CTV Calgary meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says the first few days of the cold snap may even bring a few inches of snow.

It will arrive after a mild spell in the city that has provided limited snow. It was great for those who work in the outdoor industries.

James Beck, who owns winter rental shop Outlaw Sports, says he likes what 2023 has to offer so far weather-wise.

“Usually there’s a drop right after Christmas, but this year there wasn’t,” he told CTV News. “We still want to go out and hang out and do things. We can only wash our car so many times.”
