Onyx BOOX Tab X debuts as new e-ink tablet with dedicated GPU “Smooth Refresh”

The new Tab X and the already existing Max Lumi2 are 13.3-inch (or “A4 size“) tablets with Carta 1250 e-ink displays capable of running Android 11 from the Onyx BOOX range; however, their manufacturer touts the latest model as a significant upgrade thanks to its increased battery capacity of 6300 mAh in a chassis, which is reduced to height by 1.1 mm.

It also includes a GPU (which, despite being described as “outstanding“, also found in its recent predecessor the Tab Ultra), rated to support 4 different “Super refresh” modes.

Thus, the Tab X is rated to switch between them depending on the task at hand (eg reading or drawing, driven by a 4096-level response to the compatible BOOX Pen2 Pro), in a way that can come closest to adaptive refresh for electronic reader.

The tablet’s 2200×1650 display is also powered by an (unnamed) Qualcomm octa-core processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It also has dual-band Wi-Fi, dual speakers, a built-in microphone and USB Type-C – but no 3.5mm jack.

BOOX Tab X is available either through a first-party store or through select channels including Amazon, currently priced at US$879.99 with the Pen2 Pro in the box.

I became a professional writer and editor soon after graduating. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in biotechnology that convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and life in general. This has turned into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of technology over time: I can never write enough about the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and all things streaming. Oh, and coffee.
