TULSA, Okla. – The second of the four major championships this golf season is officially underway, with the PGA 2022 Championship starting on Thursday morning in Southern Hills. With a star field led by 2007 PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods and a particularly missing longtime rival and defending champion Phil Mickelson, the Wanamaker Trophy is ready to change owners without a shortage of storylines.
Rory McIlroy on Thursday came to the fore in this conversation with the first 5 under 65 to capture the club’s leadership in the morning wave. The two-time PGA Championship winner put himself on the indoor track to win the event for the third time, overcoming tough conditions to hand over seven birds on a track that has been difficult to play so far (and will likely continue to do so. harden). The beginning of the week Woods decided that he did not have the same brilliance as his colleague, as he struggled with his approach game and scored 4 over 74 in the first round.
McIlroy set the bar for the field early, but the world № 1, 2 and 3 – Scotty Scheffler, John Ram and Colin Morikawa – have just started their first round. The afternoon wave should have a chance to threaten the top of the charts, giving us an exciting end to Southern Hills Day One.
