Cases of bird flu have been identified among flocks in several places in Quebec

Avian influenza was detected in at least four places in Quebec that same week by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

A flock of poultry in the district of the regional municipality of Les Sources is the last farm to be quarantined over the weekend.

“The CFIA has established traffic control measures and recommends that other farms in the area increase biosecurity,” the agency said on its website.

All four sites where the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza has been found are in the Estrie region. This particular strain can cause serious illness and death in birds.

Last week, Brome Lake Ducks confirmed that it had discovered a case at one of its breeding facilities on a farm in St. Claude, about 160 kilometers east of Montreal.

In Quebec, the first cases of bird flu were detected in three wild geese in April. Several other provinces have already reported outbreaks of wild and domestic populations.

The CFIA asks farmers to be vigilant and to contact 450-768-6763 if there are sick birds in their flock.

As for wild birds, the province says anyone can report a suspected H5N1 infection or death by calling 1-877-346-6763. It is advisable to avoid approaching and handling potentially infected birds until instructed to do so.
