A young woman in New York had had health problems for some time, and when she finally managed to see a doctor, she was so relieved that she cried out for a moment.

“She has a rare disease, so she’s really struggling to find care,” said older sister Camille Johnson in a tweet. “She became emotional because she felt frustrated and helpless. One tear and they charge her $ 40 without asking why she’s crying, trying to help, making any assessment, any prescription, nothing. “

“They charged her more for crying than for a vision test.” They charged her more for crying than for a hemoglobin test. “They charged her more for crying than for assessing her health risk.” They charged her more for crying than for taking capillary blood, “Johnson said, disappointed by the insult.

The New York Post explained in detail why American doctors could charge such an assessment, but it seems that this young woman did not receive the service for which she was charged.
“The Brief Emotional / Behavioral Assessment is a mental health screening that tests for signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, suicide risk, or substance abuse,” the Post said. “It is usually issued as a questionnaire, which is often distributed and filled out before visiting a doctor.
“Doctors are testing and charging for the test since 2015, when it became a federal mandate as part of the Affordable Care Act” to include mental health services as part of the main benefits that should be included in all insurance plans offered in individual and small group markets. “

Johnson told The Independent that her sister was never evaluated. She claims that the doctor at the unnamed medical facility noticed her sister’s tears, but did not say anything.
“They don’t rate her for depression or other mental illnesses, nor have they discussed her mental health with her,” Johnson said. “She has never talked to a specialist, she has not been referred to anyone, she has not prescribed anything and they have done nothing to help her mental health.
It seems that this additional charging may happen more often than we (well, at least Americans) can imagine. Another person responded to Johnson’s post with a similar experience:

Along with thousands of comments on the topic, another woman joined in with a scathing remark about the amount she was charged for a simple test:
And a grandmother was sardonic and furious at the fee her daughter was being charged by obstetrics.
