Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has admitted defeat

Australian voters ended a nine-year conservative run in the country’s national elections on Saturday, ousting Prime Minister Scott Morrison in favor of center-left Labor leader Anthony Olbanes, who is campaigning for strong action against climate change.

Early results showed that the Labor Party won 72 of the 76 seats needed to form a government, as Morrison acknowledged defeat in the Liberal National Coalition, which he has led since 2018.

He attributes his progressive policy to being raised by a single mother with disabilities in public housing.

“Tonight, the Australian people are voting for change,” Albanese said in his victory speech in Sydney.

He continued: “It speaks volumes about our great country that the son of a single mother, a disabled pensioner who grew up in public housing down the road in Camperdown, can stand before you tonight as Prime Minister of Australia.
