MADRID (AP) – The Spanish league will file a complaint against Paris Saint-Germain over the renewal of Killian Mbape’s contract, saying the “scandalous” agreement is attacking the economic stability of European football.
The league’s announcement on Saturday came after Mbape’s decision to stay at PSG instead of joining Spanish side Real Madrid.
The league said in a statement that it would file a complaint with UEFA, the European Union and the French administrative and fiscal authorities to “protect the economic ecosystem of European football and its sustainability”.
The league said the agreement puts hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk and the integrity of the sport, not only in European competitions but also in domestic leagues.
“It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which last season reported losses of over 220 million euros ($ 232 million) after accumulating losses of over 700 million euros (739 million dollars) in previous seasons (while reporting sponsorship income in doubtful estimates) , with a team costing about $ 650 million ($ 686 million) this season, could make such an agreement, while those clubs that could afford to hire the player without seeing their payroll compromised remain without to sign it.
Mbape signed a new three-year contract until 2025, saying he was happy to continue his “adventure” in Paris.
The league has filed complaints against PSG with UEFA for non-compliance with financial fair play rules in the past. UEFA initially sanctioned the French club, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport lifted the sanctions with a “strange decision”, according to the league.
“PSG is making an impossible investment, seeing that it has an unacceptable salary bill and large financial losses in previous seasons. “This violates current UEFA rules and French economic control,” the league said. “This behavior demonstrates once again that state clubs do not respect and do not want to follow the rules of such an important sector as football. These rules are key to protecting and maintaining hundreds of thousands of jobs. “
Spanish league president Javier Tebas has often attacked state-owned clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City for what he calls their disregard for financial fair play rules.
He tweeted after the news that Mbape remained at PSG that it was an “insult to football”.
