Two people have been charged in connection with a mass shooting that killed two people and left seven others injured late Thursday in the Middle East neighborhood of Chicago, police said.

The shooting happened around 10:40 pm in front of McDonald’s near Chicago Avenue and State Street.

Chicago’s Jelan Sanders has been arrested on two counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted first-degree murder and one felony of illegal weapons use. A second person, 20-year-old Cameron Abram from Riverdale, was accused of aggravated illegal use of weapons / without a FOID card in connection with the shooting.

Authorities say police have identified Sanders as the perpetrator who opened fire in the crowd, injuring all nine victims. He then fled the CTA system but was detained by officials, police said.

Earlier, police revealed that two groups were arguing before someone allegedly Saunders fired a gun at a crowd of people. The incident was filmed nearby.

Video and photos from the scene show that several of the McDonald’s glass doors and windows were completely broken.

Anthony Allen, 31, and Antonio Wade, 30, were identified as the two killed in the shooting.

According to officials, at one point a man received burns due to falling on the rails. The woman, in her 20s, was transported to a nearby hospital in a red or serious condition.

Two witnesses say they were walking near Michigan Avenue when they heard gunshots, sirens and police cars.

“It was scary,” said one witness. “Because you don’t know what’s going on. I eat in the subway here because it is close to where I live. I walk down this street and I walk down McDonald’s. What if something happens while walking down the street? It’s scary and scary. It makes you feel insecure, to be honest. “

One witness said the incident began when a large group of young people clashed in front of a restaurant when a car stopped and someone in the car started firing, hitting several people.

The mass shooting took place on the first night of a new curfew imposed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot on unaccompanied young people, sparked by recent violent crimes in various parts of the city, including armed robbery, fatal shootings and car thefts.
