Toronto announced the first case of suspected monkeypox

Toronto health officials are investigating the first suspected case of monkeypox in the city.

The case involves a man in his 40s who recently had contact with someone traveling to Montreal; the person is currently recovering in hospital, according to Toronto Public Health (TPH).

In a statement issued Saturday, the health agency stressed that the risk to the public is “very low” and that the disease does not spread easily among people. It is usually spread by contact with body fluids from measles wounds, contaminated clothing or bedding or respiratory droplets, according to TPH.

The health department advises people that they may have been exposed if they visited the Axis Club (722 College St.) on May 14 or the Woody’s Bar (467 Church St.) on May 13 or May 14.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads. Most people recover on their own without treatment, according to TPH. Everyone who is exposed is asked to observe themselves.

Dr Teresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said the provinces continued to investigate on Friday. “several dozen” possible cases throughout Canada. She also said more cases are likely to be confirmed over time.
