Storm in Ottawa: Prepare for School Interruption On Tuesday, the board warns

The Ottawa-Carlton School Board is asking families to prepare for possible school breaks on Tuesday after the big storm on Saturday.

A letter from Education Director Camille Williams-Taylor said Sunday night that downed trees, broken branches and debris affected several schools.

“Cleaning work has already begun, with the priority being to remove everything that poses a safety risk. “Given the breadth of the storm, it could take several weeks to complete the cleanup of fallen leaves and broken branches,” Williams-Taylor wrote.

The roof of Castor Valley Primary School in Greeley was damaged on Saturday and the school will remain closed for personal instruction when classes resume on Tuesday after a long weekend. Families at this school will be notified directly of the next steps.

Williams-Taylor says families in other schools need to plan ahead.

“At this point, it seems that power outages, transportation services and safe access of vehicles / pedestrians to schools could affect school operations on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. As we work to reopen schools, families need to prepare on the possibility of canceling or closing schools and childcare on Tuesday, “she said.

Williams-Taylor said the school board will have more information on families on Monday night.

The school St. Monica on Maryvale Road, in the Catholic School of Ottawa, was also seriously injured on Saturday. The school board says the school will move to virtual training on Tuesday while the damage is assessed.

Saturday’s storm blew through Ottawa with winds of up to 120 km / h, knocking down trees and power lines. At least eight people in Ontario and Quebec were killed when a powerful storm spread across the region.
