Broadcom is in talks to acquire VMware, the cloud computing company

Broadcom, the semiconductor giant, is in talks to acquire VMware, according to someone familiar with the matter.

The deal is not yet final, the man, who was not authorized to discuss it publicly, said Sunday night. Bloomberg was the first to announce the talks.

Broadcom has long been very addicted and its CEO Hawk E. Tan is known for making deals. The chip company, which was based in Singapore but moved its headquarters to San Jose, California, initially bought mostly other chip companies. But since his $ 117 billion deal to buy US chipmaker Qualcomm was blocked in March 2018 by President Donald J. Trump due to national security concerns, Broadcom is diversifying its goals. Later that year, it bought software firm CA Technologies for $ 18.9 billion and Symantec’s security division for $ 10.7 billion in 2019.

VMware, which was separated from Dell Technologies last November, is known for creating virtualization software that allows a computer to run like many machines and essentially makes calculations more efficient. It also diversifies and makes a range of data center software.
