Good news for Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 owners: the wait is over. Google Assistant is finally available for download today.
Google Assistant for Wear OS 3 is available for download in the Google Play Store and can be launched from the app menu of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. However, you can use voice commands to open Google Assistant or reprogram the clock start button as a shortcut.
This update has been awaited for a long time. When Google and Samsung first announced Wear OS 3, companies promised that the unified platform would give Samsung smartwatch users more choice in applications. Previously, Samsung’s Tizen-based smartwatches could only offer Bixby as a digital assistant. The idea was for Wear OS 3 to allow users to choose between Bixby and Google Assistant. The same will apply to applications such as Google Pay.
Google Assistant is noticeably absent from the Galaxy Watch 4 since its launch last year. Despite consumer frustration, Google and Samsung remained unclear about when Assistant would arrive, saying little more than “coming soon.”
It was clear that the wait was over before this year’s Google I / O
However, it was clear that the wait was over before this year’s Google I / O. First, Verizon accidentally hinted that the Assistant is already available in the Update Registry at the end of April. (It wasn’t.) Then, a few days later, Samsung uploaded a teaser video to YouTube showing Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4. Then, right after the main Google I / O speech earlier this month, Samsung confirmed that Assistant arrives “this summer.”
The only “surprising” thing about today’s message is how soon it arrived after I / O. (After all, it’s been less than two weeks since I / O and it’s not even officially summer yet.) On the other hand, it makes a lot of sense to ship sooner or later. At I / O, Google has stressed that it will include more Google services in the upcoming Pixel Watch when it launches this fall – and it’s hard to imagine a Pixel Watch without an Assistant.
