Rail strikes: Six months action can start within two weeks News

Six months of heavy rail strikes could begin in the next two weeks if negotiations between unions, train operators and the government fail.

Members of the Railway, Maritime and Transport Workers’ Union (RMT) voted overwhelmingly last night to leave jobs, pay and conditions in what is said to be the biggest strike in rail transport history.

The mandate for industrial action lasts until November, which means that rail passengers could face a series of strikes during this time if no agreement is reached. Both sides believe a deal is likely to be reached well in advance to avoid further disruption, but the union has said it will “exercise” its mandate “if necessary”.
