Texas Democrat Gov. Beto O’Rourke has cut off Texas Gov. Greg Abbott during a news conference in Uwalde following a mass shooting that killed 19 children and two adults.
Abbott said he would pass the microphone to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick when O’Rourke stood up. “You’re not doing anything,” O’Rourke said, adding that the shooting was “completely predictable” as gun laws have not been tightened after other shootings in the state.
Beto O’Rourke confronted Governor Abbott in the middle of a press conference on the Uwalde school shooting, saying: “The time to stop the next shooting is right now and you are doing nothing.”

Patrick told O’Rourke to “sit down … you’re off the line in an awkward meeting” and urged O’Rourke to leave the audience.
“I can’t believe you’re a sick son of a bitch to come to a place like this to make a political question,” Patrick shouted over O’Rourke.
Law enforcement officers appeared to escort O’Rourke from the press conference afterwards. Janet Shamalyan of CBS News said some people appear to have reserved seats for O’Rourke.
After O’Rourke was escorted, Abbott did not address the incident directly, but called for unity, saying that “every Texan, every American has a responsibility where we need to focus not on ourselves and our programs, but on healing and hope that we can provide for those who have suffered unintentional damage to life and loss of life. “
“We need all Texans at this point in time to make personal plans, to think about someone other than ourselves, to think about someone who has been hurt, and to help someone who has been hurt,” he continued.
After O’Rourke left, he told reporters, “these children died because the governor of Texas, the most powerful man in the state, chose to do nothing.”

After that shooting, O’Rourke said memorablely during a presidential debate, “Damn, yes, we’re taking your weapons” for AR-15. Abbott and other law enforcement officials said Wednesday that the shooter in Uwalde had used an AR-15.
Prior to the break, O’Rourke Abbott called for solutions to the mental health crisis in Uwalde, although he also said the shooter had no known history of mental illness. Abbott said local officials had told him that “we have a mental health problem, a disease in this community.”
