John Barron, a Tory MP from Basildon and Billericay, became the last Conservative to withdraw his support from Boris Johnson and called on the prime minister to resign.
In a statement on his website, Mr Baron said: “Sue Gray’s report and the capital’s police investigations paint a shameful pattern of misconduct during the pandemic, as the rest of us adhered to the covid regulations. Those responsible for setting the rules have a special obligation to follow them.
“For me, however, the most serious accusation against the prime minister is that he deliberately misled parliament. Given the scale of the rule breach in №10, I cannot accept that the Prime Minister did not know. Therefore, his repeated assurances in parliament that there were no violations of the rules are simply unreliable.
“For some, this may seem trivial, given world events. Yet a basic principle of our constitution is that we can believe that the answers we receive in parliament are correct and accurate. Parliament is the beating heart of our nation. Conscious delusion cannot be tolerated, regardless of the issue. Whether the prime minister is an asset to the party or to the country is less important.
“Since I have always said that I will look at all the available evidence before making a decision, I am afraid that the prime minister is no longer happy with my support – I can no longer use his doubts.
