Boris Johnson has weakened the rules on standards in government, so ministers found guilty of violating the ministerial code will no longer be expected to resign.
Johnson, who is facing an investigation into whether he misled parliament, said it would be “disproportionate” to require ministers who violate the code to step down. Instead, ministers will be asked to cut salaries or make a public apology.
Today, a high-ranking Tory MP became the sixth back judge to publicly demand Johnson’s resignation following the publication of Sue Gray’s report on parties that violated the blockade.
