The US Department of Defense said it was “conscious and aware” of Ukraine’s request for missile launchers, but that “decisions … have not yet been made”.
“Our goal from the beginning was to try to help them in the battle they are in today,” outgoing Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told a news briefing.
“I will not go so far as to say that it is too late to provide the Ukrainians with any system or capabilities they may need, because they are very active in the battle and have pushed the Russians out of Kharkov,” he said. Kirby.
However, Kirby said the Ministry of Defense “complies with the clock” when it comes to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“We’re always as careful as we’ve been since the beginning, given the clock here, given this sense of urgency, given that time is not our friend,” Kirby said, “which is why we keep moving equipment literally every day through the last 90 plus days of this war. “
CNN reported on Thursday that the Biden administration is preparing to send MLRS systems as part of a larger package of military and security assistance to Ukraine, which could be announced soon next week. The MLRS and its lighter version, HIMARS, can fire up to 300 kilometers (186 miles), depending on the type of ammunition.
