The man faces Ted Cruz against Uwalde in a tense face

11:20 It is not as common as one might think, but the question arises at the Kalashnikov stand in the United States.

“They will say, ‘Are you all a Russian company,'” said Dave Garretson, the cabin manager. “It’s not common, but it happens …”

Congress floors are big business, and business is booming on Saturday morning at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

After Friday’s politician-led show, attendees set out to browse and grab free bags and hats.

Even the Kalashnikov’s cabin, of Russian name and origin and everything else, was lively.

“They know the AK-47, but not the Kalashnikov,” Garretson said.

The Florida importer, a pre-2008 importer, began production after the Russian company was kept out of the market. With the aggression of Ukraine and Russia in the minds of many people and the weapons in front and in the center, this has certainly not hurt their search for the conference.

10:55 a.m. A member of the Houston Progressive Group confronted Ted Cruz at a restaurant about the Uwalde shooter’s age and access to weapons before being escorted by the senator’s bodyguards.

“What about background checks, can you talk about background checks?” Indivisible Houston’s Benjamin Hernandez asked the senator as soon as he posed with him to pose for Uptown Sushi.

“So if you look at the laws that Democrats are passing, they won’t stop a mass murderer,” Cruz said.

“This shooter waited until the day he turned 18, why is it so difficult to support stricter gun laws in this country?” Hernandez said. “You have to make it difficult to get weapons in this country.”

“My bill would stop the violence,” Cruz could be heard saying as Hernandez was escorted out of the restaurant.

8:36 a.m. An increasing number of state lawmakers are calling on Governor Greg Abbott to call them back to Austin for a special legislative session following the Uwalde mass shooting.

The calls come mainly from Democrats, who have made similar requests following past tragedies. The entire Democratic Senate in the Senate is expected to send a letter to Abbott on Saturday, calling for a special session to tackle gun violence and impose new gun restrictions.

#Governor is convening a special session now to (1) repeal the unauthorized wearing of # HB1927, raise the age of 18 to 21 to purchase weapons, and (2) investigate what happened at #UvaldeschoolMassacre. st

But the GOP controls both houses of the legislature, and now some of them have also asked to return to Austin. State Senator Kel Seliger and Republican Lyle Larson, both moderate Republicans who are reluctant to be re-elected, called on lawmakers on Friday to “do something.”

By the end of the day, a handful of other Republicans, including San Antonio’s Steve Alison and Plano’s Jeff Leach, had joined their calls.

“Texas lawmakers have work to do,” Leach tweeted. “Conversations to participate in. Debates and debates. Important decision making. And the best way to do our work openly, publicly and transparently is in a #txlege special session. Texans expect and deserve it, and time demands it. “

At a news conference on Friday, Abbott said “all options are on the table.” He made similar remarks after a couple of mass shootings in 2019, but nothing materialized.
