The man was spotted around 3:20 p.m. on Friday by police helicopter officers in a river just more than a kilometer from his residence.
A missing man from the town of Springwater has been found dead.
The Provincial Police of Ontario (OPP) said on Saturday morning that 87-year-old Harvey Doherty was spotted around 3:20 pm on Friday by officers in a police helicopter in a river just more than a kilometer from his residence.
OPP members of the emergency response team then found Doherty dead.
Acting Sergeant Terry-Ann Pencarinia, media liaison coordinator for the OPP Central Region, said on Saturday morning that the cause of death had not been determined by police and she was not sure if an autopsy would be performed.
Pencarinya was asked if there was any suspicion of unfair play.
“No, I haven’t heard that,” she said.
Doherty was last seen on Thursday, May 26, shortly before 4 pm, when he took his two dogs for a walk on the paths just behind his residence. The trail is located in County Road 27, north of Highway 26 in Midhurst.
Police said Doherty did not have his wallet with him and left his cell phone at home.
Both Doherty’s dogs had returned home before he was found Friday afternoon.
OPP says staff have exhausted all efforts and resources to find Doherty. Specialized units of the OPP – such as the emergency response team, police dogs and the aviation unit – assisted in the search.
Officers began the search on Thursday afternoon and night and continued the search on Friday morning and afternoon. A number of volunteers from the Georgian Bay Volunteer Search and Rescue Organization also helped.
An OPP command post was established at the Simco County Museum in Midhurst.
