The child is described as Black, between 5 and 8 years old, about 4 feet tall, with a thin physique and short hair. Police believe he died sometime last week.
The body was found in a hard-shell suitcase with “distinctive Las Vegas design front and rear,” Indiana police said in a statement Tuesday. Investigators hope the image will lead to tips that can help them identify the child.
A resident of a mushroom hunt in eastern Washington County found the boy’s body around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Indiana State Police said in a newsletter on Sunday. The resident immediately called the police for investigation, police said.
“We will not stop searching until we find these answers,” said an Indiana police sergeant. Carrie Hulls said Monday. “Someone took care of this little boy again. He’s 5-8 years old. He’s obviously not taking care of himself. Someone knows something. Someone there knows the answer to that question.”
An autopsy was performed on Tuesday, police said.
After a toll-free hotline was set up on Monday, police said about 200 calls had been received. No one has yet identified the child.
Anyone with information that could help identify the boy has been called to call Detective Matt Busick of Indiana Police at 1-812-248-4374 or 1-800-872-6743.
