Nearly one in four respondents in Canada in a new online survey said they were infected with COVID-19, while about three in four did not.
As the country struggles with its sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and less data is shared with the public, a Leger poll and the Canadian Research Association provide a picture of how many people have been infected.
Christian Burke, executive vice president of Leger, said it was remarkable that the rate of reported infections was higher than official figures suggest.
The online survey of 1,538 Canadians from April 8 to 10 cannot be attributed a margin of error, as Internet-based surveys are not considered random samples.
Thirty percent of respondents aged 18 to 34 said they had been infected with COVID-19, while 12 percent of those aged 55 and over had contracted the disease.
“What was really striking was the difference when it came to age,” Burke said.
“It seems to coincide with the models we see that the more social you are – going to restaurants, bars and concerts – it makes you a little more vulnerable to getting the disease.
Vaccination status also plays a role, with 38% of unvaccinated respondents saying they have been infected, compared to 20% of their vaccinated counterparts.
Almost three out of five respondents who had COVID-19 said they had mild symptoms, while 14% said they had severe symptoms that did not prevent them from performing daily activities.
One in five people infected with the virus said they had severe symptoms that kept them in bed.
Asked if they were afraid of contracting COVID-19, respondents were divided.
Forty-four percent said they were afraid of getting the virus, while 45 percent said they were not afraid.
