United Kingdom

Price per pint up to £ 8 for the first time

The price of a pint of beer has risen by more than 70 percent since the financial crash of 2008, surpassing £ 8 for the first time in London as pubs have been hit by spiraling inflation.

The average pint price in the UK rose from 2.30 pounds in 2008 to 3.95 pounds this year, according to new data from the CGA, a tracking tool for the hotel industry.

Pub owners have warned that prices could rise further as the price of barley, a key ingredient in beer, is forced by supply problems related to the war in Ukraine.

Pints would be 60 pence cheaper today if they had risen in line with average consumer prices from January 2008 to April 2022.

CGA tracks prices through regular surveys of more than 5,500 random bars and 90,000 pubs in the UK.

The most expensive pint in the country was over £ 8 for the first time in its study, reaching an average of £ 8.06 in a London pub – which was not listed.

The cheapest middle pint was at a pub in Lancashire at £ 1.79.

Prices are rising everywhere in the UK as inflation is at its highest point in decades. Food and energy prices caused much of the 9 percent jump in inflation.

The beverage industry has warned that beer will continue to rise this year due to the war in Ukraine.

Analysts at Bernstein said this week that the rising price of barley, of which Ukraine accounts for 17 percent of world exports, is a “big negative” for brewers, estimating that a “real worst case scenario” would lead to brewing barley inflation. approximately 70 per cent ”.

The latest CGA data shows that the average price of a pint has risen by more than 7 percent since 2020.

Greene King, a chain that operates about 2,700 pubs, said last month it was raising prices by an average of 4.7 pence a pint, while Marstons, the brewer, raised prices by about 8 percent in March.
