On the eve of Sonic’s 31st birthday (are you feeling old now?), Sega has finally revealed the details behind Sonic Origins, a remastered collection from Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. However, don’t expect direct ports on these Sega classics. In addition to the remastered visuals updated for today’s consoles, Sonic Origins includes new achievements, collectibles, animated short films and game modes, putting a new pair of sneakers on top of these old classics.
In Sonic Origins, players will be able to choose between classic mode or anniversary mode. In the classic mode, players will experience the games in all their original glory and original proportions. Anniversary mode offers a full screen experience with endless lives, so you don’t have to worry about being crushed to death in the chemical plant area (you know the place.)
Sonic Origins allows you to play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles in all four games, allowing you to beat Metal Sonic as Knuckles or fly through the Green Hill Zone as Tails. While Sega has given fans countless packages of the first three Sonic games, the Sonic CD has not seen a proper reissue since 2011. It is not yet known whether this version of the game will include the American or (much better) Japanese version of its soundtrack. Judge for yourself.
You can pre-order the game here, but it seems that Sega has decided to make this process as confusing as possible. Sega, Sonic fans have proven that we will open our wallets for everything, do not make it harder than it should be.
I can’t understand why the luxury version of this game just doesn’t have everything or why all the advantages are strangely distributed between the versions. Now
While it may be a while before we see the gameplay for Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins is perfect for captivating fans until then.
Sonic Origins launches on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC on June 23.
