New Mexico regulators have accused the producers of Rust in a report Wednesday that said the film’s management’s indifference to “recognized dangers” led to the death of cinematographer Halina Hutchins.
The state imposed a $ 136,793 fine on producers, the maximum allowed under state law.
The agency, the Bureau of Health and Safety at Work, which is part of New Mexico’s environmental department, said in a statement that “Rust Movie Productions, LLC’s management knew that firearms safety procedures were not followed on set. site and demonstrates a clear indifference to employee safety by not reviewing work practices and taking corrective action. “
It says the production company has received a “deliberately serious” citation, the highest level.
“Rust Movie Productions, LLC was cited for its simple indifference to the recognized dangers associated with the use of firearms on the set, resulting in death, serious injuries and unsafe working conditions,” it said.
Ms. Hutchins was shot and killed on set in New Mexico on October 21 during a rehearsal for a scene that required actor Alec Baldwin to pull out a gun.
Mr Baldwin and other producers have been named in several compensation cases. But Mr Baldwin said he was not responsible for Ms Hutchins’ death because he was convinced the gun did not contain live ammunition and because he was not responsible for checking ammunition or the safety of firearms on set. .
Ms. Hutchins, 42, was filmed as the production arranged the camera corners for the scene with Mr. Baldwin. The gun exploded, firing a bullet that killed Ms. Hutchins and wounded Joel Souza, the film’s director.
