Heavy snowfall at night led to confusing driving conditions and numerous road accidents in and around Calgary this morning.

Environment Canada reports that the city received a record 22.3 centimeters of snow at the airport yesterday. The previous record for snowfall in Calgary on April 19 was 12.4 centimeters in 1985.
However, the amounts vary considerably between the northern and southern communities of the city, with significantly less accumulation in the southern areas.

Highway 2 north of Calgary was temporarily closed near Deedsbury due to multiple knife trucks. At 7:30 a.m., Alberta 511 reported that the southern lanes were closed, and Google Maps showed slow-moving traffic to the north, extending from the incident south to Crossfield.
The incident was resolved and traffic was normalized by noon.
In Calgary, the city’s road department reported problems in many places, especially in the two northern quadrants. Among these many problems, the exit ramp from the Deerfoot Trail to the East Memorial Drive was closed at rush hour in the morning.

Due to the snowfall today, the city of Calgary stopped sweeping operations on the streets. The city says an updated schedule will be published within 24 hours.
Differences in snowfall between north and south were reflected in traffic incidents this morning, with Google Maps showing mostly normal traffic in the south on major routes and long delays across the north.

The slippery conditions were not only bad for the drivers. AHS reminded pedestrians to be careful as they walked on icy paths and sidewalks.

Calgary may have more waves tonight and early tomorrow, but that must be the end of the snow for the foreseeable future. Environment Canada says Calgary should see plenty of sunshine this weekend, with low temperatures for teens on Sunday.
