Quebec Elections: CAQ attracts another sovereign for the fall campaign

Quebec Prime Minister Francois Lego has nominated another sovereign who will carry his party’s flag in the fall election.

Lego confirmed today the nomination of Caroline St. Hilaire, a former member of the Quebec Bloc and mayor of Longoi, Quebec, as a candidate for riding in Sherbrooke, one of the largest cities in the province.

Saint-Hilaire, who was a member of the Longueuil and Longueuil-Pierre-Boucher Bloc from 1997 to 2008, before being mayor of Longueuil from 2009 to 2017, is known as a prominent sovereign and has repeatedly criticized Legault’s priorities in the past. .

The news comes two days after the Avenir Québec coalition revealed that Bernard Drainville, a former minister in the sovereignist Québécois party, would announce his own candidacy next week.

The Provincial Liberal Party suggests that the influx of candidates for sovereignists is a sign that the CAQ is not so secretly interested in Quebec’s independence campaign.

However, the CAQ responded to the concerns by saying it was a national party that did not promote sovereignty.

Sherbrooke is currently represented by Christine Labri of Québec Solidaire, who won in 2018 with 34 percent of the vote and is now running for re-election.
