At least 16 cattle were dumped on a Illinois highway after a cattle carrier’s trailer was torn apart in an accident that injured the driver and stopped traffic for hours.

On Tuesday afternoon, a towed cattle crashed into a disabled Honda minibus and coupe, dropping more than a dozen cows and bulls on the busy 80 motorway.
The truck driver’s trailer tore in the crash. There were 33 cattle in the trailer and 16 escaped on the highway. Two of the cattle had to be felled due to injuries. State police told NBC Chicago that the driver of the tractor was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Farmers nearby helped gather the remaining cattle, which were brought to a nearby warehouse.

According to Illinois State Police, 51-year-old Bradley E. Pate of Waynesboro, Virginia, has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and has been charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and misuse the tape after the carrier of cattle he drove out of the way and hit a semi-trailer.
