Use your iPhone’s camera for video calls on your Mac with Continuity Camera

While talking about the new macOS Ventura at its World Developer Conference (WWDC 2022), Apple also unveiled a useful new feature that will enhance video calling on your Mac. No, this is not a software overhaul, but instead adds new camera hardware to your Mac.

Continuity Camera is a new feature that lets you put your iPhone on your Mac and use your smartphone’s camera for Mac video calls. “With the power of continuity, the Mac can automatically detect and use the iPhone’s camera when it’s around – without having to wake it up or select it – and the iPhone can even connect to the Mac wirelessly for more flexibility,” it said. in Apple’s press release for a new feature.

But a clearer video is not all that the feature offers. With the Continuity Camera, users will be able to use Center Stage, portrait mode and a new Studio Light effect that brightens the user while darkening the background.

Apple plans to launch a Belkin stand for users to mount their iPhones on their Macs to seamlessly use a continuous camera, although the stand is not an integral part of the feature (it’s also not clear how much it will cost). Of course, sticking your phone to your Mac to keep it in place should work well.

The macOS Ventura developer beta is available for members of Apple’s developer program at developer.apple.com from now on, while it will be widely available later this fall.
