According to investigators, police were looking for someone to inspect the well-being of nearby Hermantown early Wednesday morning, and the investigation took officers to Duluth’s home.
Duluth police responded to the home around 12:30 a.m., believing that the person they were looking for had access to a weapon. After officers entered the home wearing tactical equipment, they found the bodies of five people believed to be connected.
The names of the people have not yet been released, as authorities are working to notify their relatives. Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken spoke Wednesday night before contacting grieving neighbors.
“Earlier today, an unimaginable tragedy befell our community. “One that is really, very difficult for us,” Tusken said. It makes us heavy, heavy hearts.
Two neighbors told WCCO that it was a family of four and their dog who was found dead in their home. One neighbor said it was simply impossible to conceive of such a tragedy. We were told she was a mother, father and two young daughters.

“I contacted them about snow removal, shoveling and their book club. I just can not believe it. It doesn’t make sense to me, “said neighbor Joe Miller.
The fifth victim is subject to a welfare inspection. A neighbor tells WCCO that they were relatives of the family and may have been in the midst of a mental health crisis
There is still no information on how the people died. Police say there is no danger to society.
