A small plane crashes while trying to land at Buttonville Airport: police

The pilot escaped unharmed after a small plane crashed on Wednesday night near Buttonville Municipal Airport in Markham.

Ontario provincial police say the plane was trying to land at the airport when it crashed near Highway 404 off the ramp on 16th Avenue for unknown reasons.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene shortly before 9 pm and found a damaged plane with one of its wings torn off.

Police said the pilot, the only passenger on the plane, was not physically injured.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Police said the highway ramp to 16th Avenue was closed for investigation.
