DULUT, Minnesota – Five people and a dog were found dead in a 700-block home on East 12th Street on Wednesday, according to the Duluth Police Department.
What began as a fortune test in Hermantown turned into a large police presence that unfolded in front of Duluth’s home.
The suspect is among the five killed.
Police say all the dead are relatives.
The victims and the suspect will not be identified until their relatives are notified. It is not clear how the five people and the dog died.
Duluth’s public information officer said the incident began when the Hermantown Police Department received a call to check on Hermantown’s welfare at 11:18 a.m.
An hour later, shortly after noon, Duluth police were called to the home on East 12th Street for a man experiencing a mental health crisis.
This became a larger police presence when officers learned that the man may have had a weapon with him.
The DPD called for support from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the High Police and the ATFE (alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives).
“Eventually, the Duluth Police Department was able to enter the home and find five dead and one dead dog,” said Chief Mike Tusken of the Duluth Police Department.
Chief Tusken shared his condolences to the relatives of the victims.
“Earlier today, there was an unimaginable tragedy that befell our community, one that is really, very difficult for us, that makes us have heavy, heavy hearts,” he said. “Know that our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the family and friends of these victims.
He added that he did not believe there was a threat to society.
The city of Duluth plans to release more information on Thursday.
Duluth’s public information officer said Mayor Emily Larson was out of town but was aware of the situation and sent her condolences to the victims’ relatives.
Mayo’s ambulance, DPD CORE Unit and St. Louis County social services also responded to the call.
