Teacher shot dead during Texas school shooting hits ‘cowardly’ cops

A fourth-grade teacher who was injured in a massacre at a Texas school has accused local cops of behaving like “cowards” instead of facing an unpunished shooter earlier.

Arnulfo Reyes, who was shot twice during the May 24 massacre at Rob’s primary school in Uwalde, has condemned local cops for not acting faster because gunman Salvador Ramos, 18, killed 19 children and two teachers. even when outside parents beg them to act, ABC News reported.

“After all, I’m more angry because you have a bulletproof vest – I had nothing,” Reyes said emotionally to the officers. “I had nothing. You must defend and serve. There is no excuse for their actions and I will never forgive them. “

Reyes’ students were watching a movie when Ramos started firing at the school, prompting the teacher to tell the young men to get under the table and act as if they were asleep.

Ramos, who is already shooting in an adjacent classroom, then entered Room 111 and continued his carnage, said Reyes, who was shot twice. The petrified teacher then pretended to be unconscious in order to survive the ensuing chaos.

Officials said that after Ramos entered the school around 11:30 a.m. and opened fire, officers gathered in the hallway shortly after noon, but then waited more than an hour to take him out.

Reyes, who is recovering from his wounds at a hospital in San Antonio, said Ramos continued his deadly shooting for the next hour. All 11 students in Reyes’ classroom were dead by the time the bullets stopped firing, ABC News reported.

“I’m sorry, I did my best,” Reyes said in tears to their parents. “Please don’t be mad at me.”

Ramos was not killed by a relevant Border Patrol unit until 12:50 p.m. – an unacceptable response time, according to the injured teacher. But Reyes said the 11 students and two colleagues he had lost “all at once” would not die without subsequent policy changes.

“I will go everywhere, to the end of the world, so as not to let my students die in vain,” Reyes said.

Earlier, Reyes’ students had been taught to sit at a table during an emergency, such as an active shooter, but he insisted the policy was ill-conceived.

“But we set them up to be ducks,” he said.

The injured teacher does not think he will be able to return to the classroom, but wants to be a proponent of change, while calling for the legal age of buying weapons to be raised to 21.

“The only thing I know is that I will not let these children and my colleagues die in vain,” Reyes told ABC News. “I will go to the end of the world to make sure things change. If that’s what I have to do for the rest of my life, I’ll do it. “
