Armed invaders arrested after a brutal fight with police

Two invaders, armed with pistols and knives, confronted police officers as they tried to escape the scene of a brutal robbery.

Merseyside police were called to Birkenhead in the early hours of June 29, 2021, after reports of two men trying to break into a property with firearms and bladed weapons. The caller and his partner had fled to a balcony on the second floor, as the two men were almost through the front door.

Computers Charlotte Grisentwaite and Rosie O’Sullivan arrived at the town hall minutes after the call, where they collided with two gunmen dressed in balaclavas and trying to escape. A fierce fight ensued as the two officers pulled out batons and tried to arrest the armed robbers.

Two other officers, Sergeant Nicolas Hughes and Sergeant Thomas Jurgis, also arrived and forced them in to help their fellow officers. The four officers disarmed both men after a fierce battle. Many deadly weapons were found in the attackers.

The two invaders have been arrested and charged with a number of crimes. Both pleaded guilty in the Royal Court and received 18-month and 12-month sentences in youth institutions.

The four officers will now join colleagues from across England and Wales at the National Police Courage Awards in London next month. The awards honor officers who have performed exceptional acts of bravery during or outside service.

Merseyside Police Federation President Tony Fairclough said: “This is an outstanding example of teamwork, courage, determination and professionalism of all staff involved, and an example of how our officers are exposed to danger on a daily basis to protect the Merseyside community.

“The fact that many deadly weapons were found at the scene underscores what a dangerous situation this was. We are very proud of Charlotte, Rosie, Thomas and Nicholas. They are very worthy nominees for the National Police Courage Awards.
