VICTORIA – The Victoria Hospital Foundation says it has removed a post about Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry, who won a prize in the fundraising lottery on Friday, “because it fuels so much unnecessary hatred”.

Henry won an early prize of two electronic bicycles in the May 10 draw – using a random number generator – for a lottery that favored the $ 10 million Emerge Stronger fundraising campaign to purchase more than 200 hospital equipment in Victoria.
A Twitter post from the foundation included a photo of Henry wearing an electronic bicycle helmet. More than 4,200 tickets were sold in the lottery.
Avery Broman, the foundation’s chief executive, said Monday that information on lottery winners is regularly published for “full transparency”. In this case, however, “we immediately received negative tweets that were not factual or true, so we decided to remove the post because it was not helpful.”
In many responses to the publication, Henry was criticized for not preventing enough infections, hospitalizations and deaths. The foundation has also been sought for conflict of interest, although it is an independent charity that raises funds for medical equipment, special projects, education and research at Victoria’s two main hospitals and Gorge Road Hospital, Broman said.

She said anyone could buy a raffle ticket if they were not a member of the foundation or a board member. The foundation also noted that each public lottery is fully regulated by BC Gaming.
An account identified as that of Moira Stillwell, a former BC Liberal MLA, wrote on Friday: “DBH had the opportunity to demand another draw. Classless. ”
One commentator called PR a failure to publish as a polarizing figure, but Broman said the reaction to Henry “is unlike anything I’ve seen before.”
“Anyone who supports our hospitals with a lottery ticket is doing a good thing. And getting so much negativity around something that really works well was frustrating. “
Broman said health workers have been subjected to “a lot of discrimination and hatred”, including protests in hospitals and people leaving hate-filled messages on employees’ windshields.

Henry was traveling on Monday and could not be reached for comment, according to the health ministry.
While a survey by the Angus Reed Institute in March found that 68% of British Colombians believe Henry has done well with COVID-19, giving her one of the highest ratings of approval in the country, former provincial health official Perry Kendall says that continuing to drill down on his successor is probably a mixture of misogyny and distrust of power.
“I think it’s a lot of misogyny,” said Kendall, who retired at age 74 in January 2018. “How much of that is hatred or mistrust, 50-50 maybe?” And there are a lot of people who are just stupid. ”
Kendall said he had never experienced hatred on the same scale, although he had targeted hateful mail and writing campaigns: “But it wasn’t as personalized or as nasty as that. But we didn’t have such fierce social media … with algorithms that really don’t support empathy. “

However, he claims that the bad behavior is due to a minority of people whose votes are rising online.
Kendall believes that British Colombians will live with COVID and its strains for many years to come, which may be part of the problem. While some people will want control, “it won’t make much sense in terms of public health,” others will continue to fight it, he said.
“Bonnie Henry is remarkably resilient,” he added. “I think she must be very, very tired.”
• The Victoria Hospitals Foundation’s fundraising campaign lottery continues until Wednesday with the chance to win big prizes, including a 50/50 draw with a jackpot of over $ 68,000 and a $ 20,000 plane ticket for two.
