Halton County Public Health says it has confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the area.
The health unit says the person is isolated at home and all contacts have been notified.
Local health worker Dr Hamida Megani says most people with monkeypox will have mild symptoms, but children, pregnant women and the immunocompromised are at higher risk of serious illness.
Toronto Public Health says there are eight confirmed cases in the city, 16 with negative tests and another 17 cases under investigation.
Health officials say anyone who has been in close personal contact with someone who has monkeypox can catch the virus.

The Quebec Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that there were a total of 90 confirmed cases of the disease in the province.
