Actor Matthew McConaughey issued a statement in support after a bipartisan group of senators agreed on a framework on gun control and gun violence following last month’s horrific mass shooting at Rob Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas, which killed 19 children and two adults.
The framework is focused mainly on arms control and prevention of gun violence and was announced by a group of bipartisan senators on Sunday.
It includes measures to implement an intensified screening process for people who want to buy firearms and are under the age of 21, penalties for buying straw, more funding for school staff, expanding mental health programs in schools and expanding mental health services for children and families.
McConaughey, who was born in Uwalde, Texas, said that for the first time in 30 years, he said on Instagram that “something happened.”

“Something happened for the first time in 30 years.” “The Senate has agreed on a bipartisan framework of policies that can increase responsibility for weapons in America and save lives,” McConaughey said.
McConaughey recalled a discussion he had with a U.S. senator last week during a meeting, asking, “What is the best change you can imagine?”
“Something,” the senator said, according to McConaughey.
The actor said that “something” was done to stop people kidnapping the Second Amendment.
“Something has been done to stop some of the crazy people who are abusing and kidnapping the Second Amendment with every horrific act,” McConaughey said. “Something has moved, which we hope can help us achieve our shared efforts to make the loss of so many lives important.”
McConaughey said he thanked the people who made it possible.
“I offer a firm handshake and a sincere ‘thank you’ to the members on both sides who came together and set out this framework, which can increase responsibility for weapons and save lives,” he added.
However, the actor admitted that there is still a lot of “hard work” for both sides, but said that Americans should encourage “everyone at the table to act in good faith.”
“Let’s face it, today’s announcement does not mean we have a solution, but it does support more responsible gun ownership. “There is still a lot of hard work for both sides, so let’s continue to encourage everyone at the table to act in good faith and give them our support to get this done,” McConaughey said.

“Our plan increases the resources needed for mental health, improves school safety and support for students, and helps ensure that dangerous criminals and those recognized as mentally ill cannot buy weapons. Most importantly, our plan saves lives while protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. We look forward to gaining broad, bipartisan support and accepting our reasonable proposal into law, “they added.
Following the mass shootings in Uwalde, Texas, McConaughey visited the White House on June 7 and made an emotional request to pass laws that would prevent gun violence.

“We need inspections,” McConaughey said. “We need to raise the minimum age for buying an AR-15 rifle to 21. We need a waiting period for these rifles. We need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them. “
“Right now we are in a window of opportunity that we have not been in before. A window that looks like real change, real change can happen,” he said.
