Toronto firefighters killed at the annual memorial service

Firefighters who lost their lives “while defending life, property and the environment in Toronto” were honored Sunday morning at the city’s annual memorial to the fallen firefighters.

The ceremony was held at Toronto Fire Services Station 334, 339 Queens Quay W., east of Spadina Avenue.

During the gathering, Mayor John Torrey, Fire Chief Matthew Peg and members of the Toronto Fire Department, along with representatives of the Toronto Professional Firefighters Association and the Canadian Firefighters’ Foundation, spoke and laid wreaths.

The names of 21 firefighters who died, as well as the date of their death, are added to the memorial list, which since 1848 commemorates the memory of 319 firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Today we honor the 21 firefighters who died by adding their names to the memorial list. They join those who have made the greatest sacrifice in the performance of their duties.
