Lizzo released a new version of her single “Grrrls” after receiving a reaction from disability advocates to include the word “spaz” in the opening lines of the song.
The original version of the song sparked a heated debate among fans, who were disappointed with the singer’s decision to include the humiliating term. In medicine, “spasticity” refers to an injury that makes it difficult for people to control their muscles, especially the arms and legs.
A Twitter user wrote on Twitter: “Hey, @lizzo my disability, cerebral palsy is literally classified as spastic diplegia (where spasticity refers to endless painful tightness in my legs) your new song makes me quite angry + sad. “Spaz” does not mean scared or crazy. This is an ambitious slander. 2022. Do better. ”
Lizo responded on Instagram, posting a message about the change of lyrics and explaining his decision to release a new version of the song. “Let’s be clear: I never want to promote degrading language,” she wrote, before continuing to explain how “proud” she was to have taken steps to “listen and take action.”
In the original song, Lizo sings: “Hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag / Do you see this shit? I am a observer. ” In the new version, Lizo already sings: “Hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag / Do you see this shit? Hold me. “Listen to the updated song below.
At the time of release, the song was only updated on Lizzo’s YouTube. The release of “Grrrls” follows the noise of Lizzo’s favorite TikTok “About Damn Time” and serves as the second single from the pop singer’s upcoming studio album “Special”. The new project is scheduled to arrive on July 15 through Nice Life Recording Company / Atlantic Records.
