Marjorie Taylor Green listens live: MTG accuses use of “code word” to lead January 6 uprising

Margery Taylor Green complains that “nasty” media will not be banned from the trial against her

Marjorie Taylor Green will face an administrative judge at a hearing on Friday afternoon, which could lead to a ban on the Georgian Republican from holding public office over her alleged support for the January 6 uprising in the US Capitol.

The congresswoman will be questioned about the 2021 uprising by attorney Ron Fain, representing a group of voters who challenged Georgia’s secretary of state’s office, claiming Ms. Green helped ease the attack, which ultimately tries to violate Congressional certification for Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.

They say her behavior violates a clause in the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution and makes her inadmissible for re-election.

Among other things, the case against the congresswoman depends on her repeated use of a “code word” – in particular, repeated references to the year 1776 – which, according to lawyers, encouraged the rebels who descended the Capitol.

For her part, Ms. Green appealed a federal judge’s decision to challenge her eligibility to run for re-election to continue, and in the hours before her hearing, a supporter of Trump went on Twitter to urge her fellow Republicans to “Defend the integrity of elections.”

The hearing is currently underway in Atlanta.

First witness: Professor Gerard Maloca

At the end of the introductory remarks, the first witness was called: Gerard Maloca, a professor at Indiana University.

Mr Malloca is an expert and will talk about the importance of the 14th Amendment.

Representative Green’s lawyer wants to ban his testimony.

The judge said that if the petitioners wanted to devote their time to the history of the 14th Amendment, he would listen, but he could stop the testimony.

It will not allow legal interpretation.

Speaking about the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, Mr. Bopp said: “I call it an attack. It was disgusting. “

He added that no one was accused of rioting or insurrection.

“Rap Green was the victim of this attack. Her life is in danger, she thought. She was frightened and confused, “Mr Bopp said, adding that the court would hear the testimony.

Mr Bopp said: “In principle, the rights of the First Amendment are at stake, not just the right to vote … or the right to run for office.

“In the end, the indictment not only triggers disqualification, but rather imposes a ‘serious federal crime,'” he said.

He claims that Representative Green “honors” the US Constitution.

Mr Bopp said the “voter fraud issue” raised by Trump supporters was a “quintessential” example of political speech.

Green’s lawyer says challenging the candidacy cannot be decided by the court

James Bopp Jr., representing Marjorie Taylor Green, said in his introductory statement that challenging her candidacy could not be decided by this court due to federal constitutional consequences.

He says voters have the right to vote for their chosen candidate unless there is a very convincing legal rather than rhetorical justification for it, which he says is not present here.

Mr Bopp says the rights of the First Amendment are at stake – not just the right to vote, but also protected political speech. “This is unconstitutional and should not be allowed,” he said.

He says contesting candidates is allowed under Georgian law when the candidate is not eligible to be a candidate or is not eligible to take office. Mr Bopp acknowledges that the 14th Amendment challenge relates to this second type of challenge, that it will not be qualified to take the oath of office because of an uprising – but it is for Congress, not the state, he said.

Mr Fein says the most powerful witness is Marjorie Taylor Green herself. She will be seen both in the rostrum and in videos provided in court.

“In some cases, the mask falls off and it shows us what she intended,” he said.

Mr Fein said Green’s representative’s role was not to smash windows, but to be different – she said on January 5, 2021, that this would be “our moment in 1776”, thus she called for and helped facilitate violent resistance against the US government.

This is the reason for her disqualification, concludes Fein.

Introductory statements are ongoing

The plaintiffs submitted six videos, congressional recordings and more than 20 exhibits as evidence.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Ron Fain, began by saying that this was a solemn occasion: “This is not politics, this is not theater. This is a serious case. “

Mr Fein cites the biggest uprising in US history – the Civil War – but said January 6 was closer to the Whiskey Rebellion and the Chase Rebellion.

He says the Capitol’s violent attack had many purposes, including the capture and assassination of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Vice President and other members of Congress. His goal was to prevent the electoral certification of Joe Biden and to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.

Mr Fein said that in addition to direct evidence, there would be logical evidence, such as coded language, as uprisings today are organized by social media rather than military plans. He adds that hashtags and memes can give a good word a different meaning than those in a particular subculture.

“Republicans need to defend the integrity of the election,” Marjorie Taylor Green said ahead of a hearing that could see her lose her job.

Marjorie Taylor Green took to Twitter early Friday morning before attending an administrative hearing to call on her fellow Republicans to “defend the integrity of the election.”

“Republicans must defend the integrity of the election. This is one of the most important issues in our country, “the pro-Trump Republican wrote just an hour before the trial, which will determine whether she qualifies for the by-elections.

“When people lose their right to vote and their freedom to elect their representatives, our country is lost. Only the people have the right to choose who to send to Congress. “
