The search for a 3-year-old boy who disappeared from his nanny’s backyard ended tragically with his intention in a pond.
On Wednesday afternoon, the remains of a young child identified by police as Harry K. alone were found in a pond on a Christmas tree farm 650 feet from his nanny’s house in Lowell, Massachusetts.
“I want to make it clear that we have no idea how Harry got to this pond, where he may have been, or how long it may have taken him to get to this pond,” said Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.
The boy’s parents took him to his nanny’s home at about 7 a.m. Tuesday, cops said, and at least one neighbor saw him play in the backyard at about 9:15 p.m.
Shortly afterwards, around 9.30 am, the boy’s babysitter reported missing. Police immediately began searching for him, and 200 officers, K9 units, helicopters, drone operators and horse cops were sent into the effort.
Lowell’s police alerted the community to his disappearance, using a 911 reverse system to reach out to residents and ask them to contact authorities if they have information about the young child.
“This is obviously every parent’s worst nightmare: a child who disappears in a very short period of time, painful hours of searching and then rebuilding his body,” Ryan said.
His body was found about five feet deep on the edge of a murky pond that divers entered on Tuesday, WCVB reported.
The boy’s body was found shortly before 2 pm, about 29 hours after his last sighting. It was discovered shortly after police defended their decision not to release Amber Alert, as there was no reason to believe that unfair play was involved.
Police said the young child may have wandered through the woods to Raleigh’s tree farm.
The cause of the boy’s death has not yet been determined.
