Justin Thomas: It’s sad that LIV Golf overshadows the US Open

Follow live results and updates from the US Open in Brooklyn as the third big season kicks off in the black cloud of the LIV Golf series. It was already an important week for the sport, as the first event of the Saudi-backed competition kicked off at the Centurion Club, while loyal PGA Tour supporters Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas put on a show at the Canadian Open. This creates an exciting week as the two opposing sides of the Civil War on golf clash at The Country Club.

McIlroy, who withstood the challenge of PGA Championship winner Thomas to win the Ontario title last week, is a favorite before the US Open as he seeks to end his great drought. The 33-year-old has played sparkling golf in the previous two major tournaments this season and feels confident he has the game to order four consecutive rounds. The four-time big winner will also be challenged by defending champion John Ram, who is among the top starters, as well as by Masters champion Scotty Scheffler.

Elsewhere, there will be a lot of interest in the LIV Golf contingent, especially Phil Mickelson, just days after the rebels were banned from the PGA Tour. Bryson DeChambo, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed are among those who will sign up for the controversial event, and the reception they will receive will be another topic of conversation about what will be an eventful week. It’s been 10 years since Web Simpson won the US Open, but he is back in the competition after the chip-eagle of the 8th brought him to -2. There are now eight players of that value, including Matt Fitzpatrick, who also takes advantage of Par-5 with a bird.

Air shot warning! Sam Horsfield tries to hit a flop close to the green at 10 and his bat hits right under the ball, which doesn’t even move. Scary thing for the Englishman sees him fall to +1.

Here comes Thomas! After a slow start, the PGA champion takes a bird on par-5 8th to go red for the first time.

It goes from bad to worse for Mickelson, who has an absolute nightmare on par-3 6th. A good shot gave him a great chance for a birdie, but then he hit four! He shakes his head as he leaves the green park, and the maintenance of the last few months seems very heavy on his shoulders.

Still, there is good news on the English front. Fitzpatrick makes a great bird on the short 5th after finding the green one with a 3-tree from the tee and then briefly misses a bird in the complex 6th. This keeps him at -1, where he is joined by Justin Rose, whose start of a roller coaster ride included three birds and two carts.

Both Koepka and Smith manage to make subtle escapes to save money. However, Mickelson cannot repeat this. This is another rusty chip and a blow from the 52-year-old and now he is three through five holes.

Mickelson is not the only one to strike horrific blows. Moments after Cam Smith pulled his approach one mile into the country at 15, Brooks Koepka challenged him by throwing one straight into the stands.

Andrew Novak, number 362 in the world, moves to the lead after a bird hat-trick to close his top nine.

However, there is no luck for Mickelson’s birthday. After drilling two of his first four holes, he pulls his way to the right of the fairway, and that’s a problem again.

Na can’t get up and down for a boogie and expensively cancels much of his good start.

However, Thomas made up for his early mistake with a great shot with a tee, which faded in the back corner of the green in par 3 6th. He rolls in a confident treadmill and the PGA champion returns to par.

DeChambeau entered this tournament under the radar due to a wrist injury, although he is one of the most high-profile players to join the LIV series. After three bucks, a bird on the 14th sees the US Open 2020 champion move to -1.

Justin Rose nearly broke 60 last weekend, and although he hasn’t kept that vein in shape, one bird brings him back to the level after a tough start.

There are problems for Kevin Na, and the referee has to take a penalty. He then flies on his terrain in the long green color and will fight to escape with backgammon.
