EMS confirmed that paramedics arrived around 3:20 p.m. and found two people on the plane. A man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman in critical condition, believed to be in her 30s, was taken to Foothills Medical Center in Calgary.
The affected plane was a Mooney M20K, according to a statement issued Friday night by the Transport Safety Council of Canada.
Online sellers describe the aircraft as a four-seater, single-propeller aircraft.
The board said it was sending a team of investigators to the crash site to gather more information about the crash.
Michelle Spiers was driving on the highway to Cochrane as she passed the scene. She said the front of the plane was severely damaged and the passenger’s door was torn off. There was an unmarked police vehicle with a fire truck on the scene, she said. She saw EMS hurry to Calgary.

“It’s certainly tragic,” Spiers said. “It makes you wonder what happened.”
A photo taken by Spiers shows a small plane in a field near the highway. One wing appears to have disappeared from the fuselage of the aircraft, while the other has traces of burns, and the grass near the aircraft appears to have burned. Half a dozen firefighters are close to the plane, while the wreckage can be seen in the short distance. The photo also shows a fire extinguisher.
Traffic on nearby Highway 1 is unaffected, but the RCMP urged drivers to be careful as they travel through the area.
Springbank Airport is close to the Harmony community, just north of the Trans-Canada Highway.
It is run by Calgary airport authorities, who tweeted the crash late Friday afternoon.
“We know that a plane crashed north of (Highway) 1 in Rocky View County,” the statement said.
“Our condolences to those affected by this loss. We will support the agencies leading the investigation of the cause. “
