Google is launching new pop-ups with a “reject all” option in Europe

Google is changing the pop-up cookies in Google Search and YouTube in Europe. The new cookie banner is now being launched and the main change it introduces is the integration of a “reject all” button to block all non-essential cookies from being set and non-essential data from being collected.

Right now, when you visit a Google-owned website for the first time, you’ll see a cookie banner before continuing. The banner informs you about the use of cookies in the property. The classic banner has two buttons, one for personalizing data collection and one I agree.

Users who want to reduce the use of cookies and data collection should select the “customize” option to change the default settings. The “I agree” option gives Google full control over the collection.

The Customization page shows several options, including YouTube History, Search Customization, or Customizing Ads, which can be included or excluded in the property.

The new cookie banner now available in Europe gives users an easier option to block all but necessary cookies.

Google notes in the announcement that this is coming to Google Search and YouTube in Europe for visitors who are not signed in to a Google Account at the time or are in incognito mode. Deployment has begun in France, and Google plans to soon provide the updated cookie banner in all Member States of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland (Google did not provide details).

The cookie layer provides details on the use of cookies and data collection when users select the Reject All or Accept All buttons.

According to him, Google will use a basic set of cookies and data regardless of the user’s choice. The data is used to “deliver and maintain Google services,” track disruptions and protect against spam, fraud and abuse “and to” measure audience engagement and site statistics. “

The additional set of cookies and data is used only if the user selects “accept all” or keeps certain options on the customization page enabled. Users who select the new Reject All button will no longer collect:

  • Development and improvement of new services.
  • Deliver and measure ad performance.
  • Display custom content depending on your settings.
  • Show customized ads based on your settings.

Concluding remarks

Some companies and organizations make it difficult for users to reject all non-essential cookies. Entering the “reject all” option, which is prominently displayed as the “accept all” button, is a step in the right direction.

Internet users have a number of options to handle cookies and data collection on their part. They may disable third-party cookies in their browsers, regularly clear cookies, use extensions to bypass and automatically decline cookie prompts, or use various services such as Brave Search instead of Google Search, Invidious instead of Youtube. Extensions like Privacy Redirects help with this automatically.

Now you: how do you handle the collection of cookies and data on the Internet?
