NL film giant Paul Pope has died

A driving force in the province’s film industry has died.

Paul Pope of Pope Productions died Thursday morning, according to his family. The producer is known throughout Canada for his filmmaking work as a founder and former president of NIFCO (Newfoundland Cinematography Cooperative) and for his work on hundreds of films.

Pope helped develop CNA’s new film and media production center, announced Wednesday. He was unable to attend Wednesday’s announcement.

Some of his most famous works include Rare Birds, starring the late William Hurt, My Left Breast for Jerry Rodgers’ Diagnosis of Breast Cancer, and the television production Hudson and Rex, which airs in Canada and has long list of countries in Europe and South America. .

Pope’s work has won a number of awards, including the ArtsNL Arts Achievement Award, the Douglas James Dales Industry Builders Award, he was recognized by the City of St. John with the Tourism Award in 2021 and received an honorary doctorate from Memorial University .
