NASA’s rover, Perseverance, has been on the planet since last year to detect signs of life. However, NASA tweeted that the rover came across something unexpected: human garbage.
My team noticed something unexpected: this is a piece of thermal blanket that they think may have come from my descent stage, the rocket-powered jet pack that took me down on the day of landing in 2021. pic.twitter.com/O4rIaEABLu

What is? The garbage is reportedly a piece of thermal blanket used to protect the rover from extreme landing conditions, according to Business Insider.
How did you get there? NASA scientists aren’t sure how the garbage got to where it is.
- A post on the rover’s Facebook page reads: “It’s surprising to find this out here because my descent phase crashed about 2 km. Did this piece land here after that, or was it blown away by the wind?
History of space junk: This is not the first time human debris has been spotted on Mars.
- On April 19, part of the parachute and the rear shell of the rover were spotted on the red planet, according to Space.com.
criticism: People on social media were quick to react to the waste found on Mars, the Miami Herald reported.
- A commentator on NASA’s Facebook post wrote: “I guess it won’t be long before we start seeing soda bottles, discarded fast food packaging and plastic waste on Mars. Maybe we should send a robot with a broom to start tidying up now. ”
- Another commenter wrote, “How to pollute without being physically (in place): that’s another level.”
- “Just because people don’t like remains and debris doesn’t mean Martians hate them either. We know nothing about them. They could eat pollution, as far as we know, “another commentator joked.
