The Omicron BA.2 variant has dominated new infections in the United States for weeks without causing a major spike so far, raising hopes among some public health experts that the nation could avoid a major blow.
BA.2 affects in particular the north-east, where virus concentrations in wastewater are increasing along with reported infections in places such as New York, Washington, DC and Philadelphia. Concerns about BA.2 prompted Philadelphia to reinstate the indoor mask requirement and US authorities to extend mandates for aircraft masks and other forms of transportation.
